On 28th February 2006 Mrs. Hong and Mr. Cornille visited Kim Giang, one of the IMIH pilot schools of the third phase. The schools has 45 staff members – 32 of them are teachers – and 600 students are currently enrolled. Kim Giang has a well equipped computer room with 30 computers (Pentium 3) and 5 computers for administrative use. These computers were purchased in 2002 through an unique loan from the parents of the school. There are 7 ICT teachers working @ Kim Giang since 100% of the students are following the ICT classes.

We are happy to confirm the school is commited to IMIH. At the moment 6 subjectteachers with advanced ICT skills are enrolled in the E4ICT course (all in group C). More teachers are willing to join the E4ICT course if we change the location closer to their school. Also, the director and vice-director cannot participate in the course unless the time tabel is rearranged.

The school expressed the need to obtain a LCD projector and more ICT skills training. There is also a serious need for guidance on how to integrate ICT in the classroom (pedagogy + ICT). It is estimated that 1/3 of the teachers can effectively use Word, PowerPoint and VIOLET. A request was put forward to organise a one week ICT basic skills training course for them during the summer holiday before moving on to more advanced software.

The school does only have access to the internet through a dial up connection (1260) and has no LAN either. (Ofcourse, in the area there are a lot of cybercafe) The school uses a management system from Schoolnet but requires a student & staff monitoring system. It seeks advice and support from IMIH and DOET. By 1st April 2006 Kim Giang will provide information for the school website IMIH will set up for them.

Project team meeting

  • Blog workshop

The IMIH project team members are assigned to work 2 full days per month for IMIH only. During that time workshops, brainstorm sessions and meetings will be organised to better prepare the capacity building program for ICT integration in teaching and learning.

On the 10th of February a workshop took place on the use of blog, an exciting social technological tool. The ICT coordinators of the pilotschools and the IMIH project team members received some background info on the blog revolution. The benefits and the use of blogs in an educational setting was discussed. Then the workshop participants got the chance to set up a blog as part of an e-learning training program. Unfortunately, the LAN at Quan Trung did not allow us to view these blogs. We were not able to solve the problem either (to be continued)

  • E4ICT

A request was made by the project team members to create a separate IMIH group that can join the E4ICT course. A proposal was put forward to Mr. Hung. It was agreed that Mrs. Hong and Mr. Cornille will team teach since the objectives of the course are to teach English and at the same time to integrate ICT into the lesson. They will teach on Mondays and Thursdays from 4p.m. until 5.30p.m during a period of 3 months. Also, the managers of the pilot schools will join the IMIH group.

The medium used in the first week will be pictures: the use of a digital camera and of course, a computer. Pictures have been taken of advertisements and shops in Hanoi that use English words. Other pictures were selected via the search engine Google that will be used in exercises on pronunciation and singular/plural.

The scientific advisor to the project, Peter Van Gils, will arrive on Sunday 2nd April 2006. After meeting the HRCTEM director Mr. Hung, directors of the pilot schools and the IMIH project team he will visit three pilot schools, one kindergarten, one primary and one lower secondary school. On the 5th and 6th April Peter Van Gils will give an introductory two day workshop on a new ICT teachers’ toolkit. At the same time it will be the official launch of the second part of the capacity building program on ICT integration in teaching and learning.
February/April: E4ICT
May/June: ICT teachers’ Toolkit

  • IMIH Resource Centre

The budgets for 2006 have been slightly rearranged for us to be able to buy more new computers for HRCTEM. The IMIH resource centre was set up with computers dating back from the school management project. The life span of a computer is on average 4/5 years. Therefore, to secure a good internet connection the set up of the Resource Centre needs to be changed (Management Information system+ An Acceptable Use Policy). It was decided to try to set up a new centre for Internet Research only. The other computer room will be used for teaching basic and advanced ICT skills (No internet). At the same time Mr. Hung suggested to move the IMIH offices to the third floor where a very big room will be made available. The design of the room has also been discussed thoroughly. Following best practices seen during the study trip to Hong Kong (See also The Goethe Institute, Hanoi) new round tables are selected allowing for individual and group work. Also, shelves for a library need to put in the request to VVOB Brussels. This centre will also be the place where the IMIH project team will work as e-tutors moderating the e-learning students.

  • Moodle

Mr. Vinh and Mr. Cornille are designing the HRTEM Moodle. The first version is expected to be ready on 20th February 2006. The virtual learning platform will be the home of 3 courses in 2006: E4ICT and ICT Teachers Toolkit. The proposal for the Advanced Flash course was also discussed and accepted by the IMIH project team members. Mr. Huy, Mr. Son, Mrs. Quy, Mrs. Thuy and Mr. Duong proposed to participate. A request will be made and sent to VVOB for approval. The advanced flash course will also make use of the Moodle.

  • A.O.B.

The wedding of Ms Quy was also discussed. It will take place on 23th February 2006.

Robert Cope, director of UNESCO (CICE) @ official opening of the E4ICT course. 175 students are starting the 3 months training course on 13th February 2006.
